Romney, George
(15 dic. 1734, Dalton-in-Furness, Lancashire, Inglaterra–15 nov. 1802, Kendal, Westmorland).

Pintor retratista británico. Hijo de un ebanista de Lancashire, comenzó su carrera viajando por los condados del norte, y pintando retratos por unas pocas guineas. En 1762 se estableció como retratista en Londres, y rápidamente ganó el favor de clientes de la alta sociedad. Su éxito se debió a la forma halagadora en que pintaba a sus modelos, evitando cualquier sugerencia de su carácter o sensibilidad. Locamente enamorado de Emma Hart (más tarde Lady Hamilton) 1781–82 pintó más de 50 imágenes de ella. En su obra, la línea prevalece sobre el color. Los ritmos ondulantes y las sencillas poses típicas de la escultura clásica romana subyacen en los limpios diseños de sus composiciones.
